Individual Counselling (Online)

Counselling should fit into your life. Online counselling allows you to be able to be apart of your change process without letting your location across Canada be a barrier. The same level of service is provided as in person counselling. A secure online format (JaneApp) is used and ensures encryption and protection that mirrors the office experience.

Consultation (Online, Phone)

Contact Keith for a free 15 minute online consultation session. This will give you an opportunity to share your story, ask any questions you may have, and see if we would be a good fit.

Couples Counselling (Online)

Couples counselling using the Gottman Couples Counselling Framework. The Gottman method combines years of research and counselling experience to provide a framework for growing together as a couple. What will Individual Counselling look like?

The process may look different for each individual as it is not a cookie cutter format. Each experience is tailored to the individual’s needs. In general, the first session will be an opportunity to understand where your strengths are and what needs to change. This is also where goals will be explored based upon where you want to grow.

The following sessions will work towards meeting the goals that you set forward. The amount of session will vary for each individual. Throughout the process, the goals will be evaluated and continued to be talked about. After most sessions I will ask you to do a little homework. The counselling session is only a small part of your life so this allows you to put into practice what is being discovered within the sessions. This homework will be something that we will work together on to ensure that it is tailored to you and is realistic.

Before your first session:

You will have to sign and return the informed consent form. Please sign and return it before your first session. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and explore the information at the beginning of the first session. Please also complete all questions on the intake form. The first session will allow further exploration of some of these areas. It is the belief of Three Points that having a greater understanding of many points of a clients life can help to explore current strengths and areas for growth.

What to expect from the first session?

The first session may look a little different from future sessions. In this session will be an opportunity to explore the informed consent form and the intake forms. Your counsellor may have more questions for you in this session to better understand your story. There will an opportunity for you to set some goals for counselling. Not sure what your goals are? Your counsellor will help you set goals. It is the recommendation of Three Points Counselling that the second session should be booked the following week to keep the momentum of progress.

Why online?

I think the Pandemic has brought to the forefront how important it is to connect and seek help. Online counselling has allowed the connection to occur despite all the hurdles that could be faced. Research has shown that online counselling can provide similar growth and change as in person counselling.

Things to know about online counselling:

  • The online video format is secure and protected with high level encryption. It is more secure than FaceTime or Zoom.

  •  It is easy to use. When you book your session, you will be provided a link to the JaneApp video session 30 minutes before your scheduled time. The link will allow you access to the secure room.

  • It allows you the freedom to attend counselling where you feel comfortable and without having to worry about travel time.

It is important to note that your online counselling should always take place where you feel safe and secure and can talk freely without distractions. Please do not attend in a coffee shop or public place as it may limit your comfort level and your growth potential in counselling.

The online counselling process:

  • You will be sent a link to enter the session from your email that is used on JaneApp to book an appointment. You will also receive another email 30minutes before the start of your session with the link.

  • Your counsellor will ask for your location at the start of every session.

  • If there are issues with the video connection, please try and reconnect to JaneApp first. This may require you to log out and log back in. Also check your internet connection. If the issue persists, your counsellor will reach you via the email that you provided. It is up to the counsellor to deem the necessary next steps to take at that point. The steps may include jumping to a secondary room on doxy.me. Doxy.me is just as secure as JaneApp for use. If this is needed, you will be send to the link. The link is also listed here: doxy.me/keithbalisky

What will Couples Counselling look like?

Gottman Couples Counselling is used as the primary modality for couples counselling. It is effective for couples of opposite sex and same sex couples.

What is Gottman Couples Counselling about?

The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy is based on Dr. John Gottman’s research that began in the 1970’s and continues to this day. The research has focused on what makes relationships succeed or fail. From this research, Drs. John and Julie Gottman have created a method of therapy that emphasizes a “nuts-and-bolts” approach to improving clients’ relationships.

This method is designed to help teach specific tools to deepen friendship and intimacy in your relationship. To help you productively manage conflicts, you will be given methods to manage “resolvable problems” and dialogue about “gridlocked” (or perpetual) issues. We will also work together to help you appreciate your relationship’s strengths and to gently navigate through its vulnerabilities.

What to expect from the sessions:

The sessions follow a specific framework. Assessment occurs over 3 sessions. The first session is with the couple. The second session is split between two individual sessions for each member. The third session and the majority of the following sessions with be completed together. There are a number of questionnaires to be completed between the first and second session.
